This project was an endeavor to understand the moving body through rotoscope animation. With the assistance of my teacher, Jonathan Smith, at WashU (2021), I had roughly two weeks to plan and complete my own self-directed illustration project. To me, this was an opportunity to experiment with an area of animation that I hadn't before.
My initial concepting had to do with aerial silk dancing, a form of gymnastics that I've admired for a long time. Looking at a 2014 Dior commercial and the work of Cirque Du Soleil, I decided to do a set of three animated gifs of dancers in motion.
For my body reference, I posed Clip Studio's free 3D body model references.
Between Clip Studio and Adobe Photoshop, I explored my options for illustrative animation and finally finished my three gifs, found below.
